Dear OMOS Fifth Grader’s and Family,
Welcome to Fifth Grade Homeroom Religion, Mathematics and Science!
My name is Mrs. Utegaard, one of the fifth grade teachers. This is my first year as a classroom teacher at OMOS. I have been teaching for many years and am so very excited and honored to be your teacher at OMOS. Our classroom is Room # 11 located in the north building.
I know you must be excited to move to fifth grade and into another building. We will be doing things in a different way with different schedules, that I think you will enjoy, once you learn the procedures. You will also have other classes through the week in Art, P.E., Spanish, and Music. It is going to be a great year of learning and growth!
I was married at Our Mother of Sorrows Church many years ago and have three adult children. I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance at the University of Maryland and my Master of Arts in Education from the University of Phoenix. Tucson has been my home for over thirty years. I was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised on Long Island, NY.
As fifth graders, you will be learning and studying the lives of saints and acquiring a deeper understanding of our liturgy. Our focus will be on the Sacraments, particularly the Sacrament of Holy Communion and of Confirmation and how Jesus is present in our lives through the Sacraments.
Fifth grade is a very important year in mathematics. It is the year to review and understand previously taught skills and master them. Without a solid foundation in mathematics it is difficult to acquire more advanced concepts. We will be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers, decimals and fractions. In addition, we will be analyzing data and graphs, exploring geometric figures, measurement, ratio, percent, and probability. I believe every student can learn and that learning is fun and challenging.
In Science, you will be learning about plants, weather and climate, the energy of sound and light, earth, the human body, and ecosystems around the world. We will be conducting experiments in a cooperative learning format. Teamwork, listening to and learning from your peers, is important to everyone’s successful learning experience.
I look forward to sharing this journey through fifth grade with each of you, as my partners, in guiding your child on his/her journey of becoming a lifelong learner. I truly believe, “It takes a village, to raise a child.” I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!
God bless YOU!
